String Chamber Music Day Camp for Middle Schoolers

This day camp is for middle school students who have completed at least one year of school orchestra, and is in or completed 5th through 8th grades. This intensive half day camp will be for 4 days from 9:00am-1:00pm every day, Monday through Thursday. It offers participants the opportunity to rehearse and perform in small ensembles with students of similar skill level and to work with knowledgeable instructors with experience working with chamber ensembles. High School Students who have had experience in previous string chamber music camps will be counselors and chamber music coaches who will assist lead teachers. Each day will end with a large ensemble rehearsal for all players to participate together. The camp will conclude with a final performance around 1:30/2:00pm of all ensembles on June 27, 2024.

Cost: $200 per camper

DESCRIPTION: This day camp is for young pianists in either Primer Level or Level One method books.
The camp will feature a showcase of fun music games that will help to strengthen students' knowledge of music. Games on and off the piano bench will focus on note reading, rhythmic accuracy, sight reading, and improvisation skills. Students will also learn valuable social skills as they interact with other campers.

A confident and energetic performer, Twin Cities-based harpist Amy Nam has appeared as a soloist with the McGill Contemporary Ensemble, the Vanderbilt University Orchestra, and the Sewannee Summer Festival Orchestra. She holds a master’s degree in harp performance from McGill University, where she studied harp with Montreal Symphony Orchestra principal harpist Jennifer Swartz, as well as a master’s degree in composition from the Eastman School of Music, where she studied harp with Kathleen Bride. She completed her undergraduate studies at Vanderbilt University, where she studied harp with Marian Shaffer and graduated with first honors as the Blair School of Music Founder’s Medalist.
Nam has written a number of works both for the harp and other instrumental ensembles. Recently, Nam received funding through Chamber Music America’s Classical Commissioning program to write and perform a new piece with the Rochester, NY-based ensemble fivebyfive to be premiered this October. In 2018 Nam’s work Somewhere to Elsewhere, for harp and ensemble, was selected from nearly 700 entries for a BMI Student Composer Award. In 2020, she won the Lyra Society’s 7th Annual Costello Competition for Composition.
Nam is on faculty at Luther College in Decorah, IA, and teaches at Mt. Calvary Academy of Music in Excelsior, MN.

ROCK BAND CAMP-August 14-18, 2023
Rock Band Camp returns to the Hastings Arts Center this August 14-18th. Students will experience and participate in the process of working together as a group learning rock music from various decades. The week will close with a free community concert showcasing the groups work during the week. The camp is led by Trent Tejeda, Blessings Academy of Arts and Music guitar teacher. INTRO TO DRAWING WITH CHARCOAL--August 24 and 31 (Thursdays)
The Hastings Arts Center is excited to host an Intro to Drawing with Charcoal Workshop offered by Jeremy Haney of JDH Fine Art. This workshop is in 2 parts so when a student registers, they are registering for two days of the workshop. Please make sure you can attend both dates.
